Hello My Friends:

I saw the tail end of this documentary on the Discovery Health Channel in the USA last night.  It followed a couple of children who had episodic extreme rage.  One of the children was a 4-6 year old girl who was on her 6th combination of medications.

The term BPD was not used.  I believe because BPD is a diagnosis that can only be given after a prolonged period of symptomatology (especially symptoms like inability to have normal stable relationships are only revealed when they are recurrent).

Instead the commentator said that the mental health community was considering a new syndrome called "Temper Control Disorder".

I am sorry I did not get to see the entire program.

I'd like comments from others who may have seen it or know any details about it.

Perhaps we are seeing the biological origins of BPD here.

I believe that just like autism can be better managed with early intervention, perhaps so can BPD when caught this early...whether it is called BPD or Temper Control Disorder, the destructive raging due to low distress levels and inadequate impulse control can be behaviorally managed with proper therapy.

I thought that documentary brought some hope.

I'm not in the USA, so I don't have access to Discovery Health Channel. But it certainly is an interesting topic. A look at the Discovery Health Channel website's TV schedule for yesterday, suggests that you might have seen the following documentary: Bipolar Mysteries, which has the following description: "In this hour, we follow four families raising children diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder."

If that is indeed the page for the documentary you've seen, then you might still get a chance to watch or record the whole documentary. According to that page it will be aired again on 10/16/10 at 3:00 pm and again on 10/19/10 at 3:00 pm.

I'd be interested in hearing more, if you get a chance to watch the reruns.

Thanks.  That's the one.  It is interesting that in the short segment that I watched, it seemed to me that the children were being called "bipolar" while their primary symptom seemed to be raging.

I think that this documentary would be an insightful one to watch and may have some bearing on the BPD issue as well.

i recorded and watched bipolar mysteries last night.  these kids are all medicated up!

one of the pdocs in the program said that these young children do not quite meet the criteria for bi polar and said they are not sure what they have... ?

temper dysregulation disorder...sounds a lot like emotion dysregulation disorder to me!
