Title: Newly diagnosed adult child with BPD
Post by: Baystateparent on August 25, 2023, 06:19:45 PM
Our older daughter has been struggling for a long time, and was recently diagnosed with BPD.  We are looking for treatments for her, and are currently considering sending her to a residential treatment facility.  We are looking for advice on that front, and also more generally as to how we can help her.

Hi Baystateparent and welcome to the group  :hi:

You and your family must have been through a lot, to have an adult daughter just now getting a diagnosis after years of struggles. How is everyone coping with her receiving the diagnosis? Is she accepting of it?

It's great that you are supportive of her getting treatment. There have been success stories here of parents sending children to RTCs; in fact, in this thread about Supporting a Child in Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=198345.0), there's a post linking to one mom's story of her D13's RTC stay. Check it out here: Residential Treatment: Journal of 12 Month Journey (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=120563.0)

Is your D open to going to treatment?

Let's start there, as I bet you have more than enough on your plate right now. Feel free to post questions and updates on whatever timeline works best for you. There are so many resources on this site for parents of children wBPD, so I'll just leave one link here (to our article section on When a teen or adult child has Borderline Personality Disorder (https://bpdfamily.com/portfolio-child)) before wrapping up, so it's not overwhelming!

Looking forward to hearing more;
