Title: BPD Therapists in Tacoma WA area or via Skype
Post by: wa_husband/dad on May 12, 2015, 01:57:22 PM
I am thinking it would be good to speak with a therapist who has has experience with BPD.  I have done some searches but can't seem to find anyone in my area with this kind of experience.  Does anyone here happen to know of experienced BPD therapists in the Tacoma, WA area or via skype?

Hi wa_husband/dad.

I will ask my MC if she knows of anyone in her network. She's up north of you, and has treated BPD over many years before going to private practice.

I did a little online research and found a therapist who does DBT therapy in your area. I can PM you the details if you'd like.

Sure. I doubt I can convince her to go, but what the heck? My understanding of DBT is that it is most effective when done in individual and group sessions. My MC didn't think that my wife would manage any group sessions so well based on her age/experience. It can't hurt.

Takingandsending: The therapist I found was in the Washington area, and meant for the original poster.

It's funny though, my husband's psychiatrist sent him to DBT therapy, and his DBT therapist said she wasn't going to put him in group because his case wasn't as severe(let her live with him, he can "present" as very high functioning to others), and I now wonder if due to his age/experience, like with your wife? My BPDh is 48, and very resistant to listening to others. I was initially disappointed that there would be no "group" sessions for him, but maybe there is a good reason for it... .

Oops, sorry about that. Thought wa_husband/dad had replied to me.

Re. the group DBT, my MC worked as a county mental health counselor for many years. She said that in her experience, the people in DBT were younger and were often really struggling (less functional). It may just be more rare to see the functional or highly functional BPD/NPD in that group setting. And if that is true, the difference in age and experience may become an obstacle to listening/relating/developing meaningful empathy within the group.

I have heard from other posters that there are DBT groups where the composition is older, but I have not done a search to see for myself.
