Title: 18 yo daughter recently diagnosed with "borderline traits"
Post by: 1hope on June 09, 2017, 07:23:30 PM
Hi everyone.  Our 18 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with "borderline traits".
We are struggling.   She has suicidal ideation, and has attempted twice, most recently 2 1/2 weeks ago.  She also has anxiety (managing this better), depression, and OCD.

She has a psychiatrist, mental health case management worker, and a psychologist who is doing DBT with her (beginning stages).

Any words of advice for coping would be appreciated.  Thanks.

It sounds like your daughter is getting all the right help and support that she needs. My daughter who is also 18 and recently diagnosed, refuses all treatment and has run away from home. Coping is very challenging and I simply take it day by day and look for any positive that I can. Remember to take care of yourself and other children if you have any. Knowing that you are doing all the right things for your child hopefully will make you feel better and hopeful for the future.

Thanks for responding!  I'm hoping to find support here, since this is a difficult thing for others to understand.

Although we have support for our daughter, it seems like we're spinning our wheels.  When she "spirals" and becomes depressed and suicidal we don't feel like anything works.  She's not yet able to use any effective strategies she has been taught.  Then we are on watch... .

I feel for you.  It must be so hard when she runs away!  How are you coping?  I know everyone says to take care of yourself, but I also know how hard that is when you are caught up in the crisis!
