Title: I have decided to see a local therapist...
Post by: Mr. Solo on November 17, 2014, 01:09:34 PM
... .who helps families deal with the effects of BPD. Our three children and I will begin seeing the therapist in December. This therapist also does family/couple counseling but I doubt my dBPDw will go any time soon as she doesn't like counseling (unless she is just going to run her mouth). This therapist specializes is BPD, PTSD, anxiety issues, etc. Hopefully this will help me and our children in the long run.

Good luck! I think you're doing the right thing. I've read that therapists who work with BPD patients often get counseling themselves to remain grounded. And you live with a BPD patient!

Hi Mr. Solo.

I think you are going to get benefit from this, and especially your kids will. I really admire you for taking this step for yourself and your family, and you deserve and need support. Living with a person with mental illness is exhausting, demanding and can be isolating. Only we have the power and choice to turn change that by seeking help, understanding and eventually reaching some level of acceptance.

Please let us know how your journey continues. I hope that it goes well.

Yes, I think it's essential to take care of ourselves. I've started seeing a therapist too some weeks ago, and my D10 too (although hers is not very nice and she'll have to change).

Good luck with your therapist

I spoke with the therapist on the phone for a while today. It turns out, this therapist worked as the case worker for my dBPDw when my wife was diagnosed with BPD at a residential facility. Wow. Small world.

I was giving her a run down and she said, "Wait! This sounds familiar. What is your wife's name?" When I told her she said she remembered her and even remembered some of the details. Although I like the fact she remembers (because she knows I am not full of crap), I am sure, if my wife ever were to consider going to this therapist, the fact the therapist knows her prior, it will make my wife that much more resistant to going (knowing she can't get away with telling lies as easy).

Still. I go to my initial face to face with the therapist Friday, at 1:00pm.
