Title: need advice please on family therapy
Post by: lostbutpraying on January 25, 2013, 09:53:37 AM
Long story short my BPDbf was diagnosed 5 months ago but his family just found out. He is extremely close with his family as am I. I tried to talk with them about it but they are having a hard time with the diagnosis.

I suggested meeting with a therapist who specializes in BPD and dbt so they can learn about the illness and tools to help when he's in crisis mode.

Has anyone else done this? I'm looking for help. He's not in a good place at the moment and we are in high alert for destructive behaviors.

Hello lostbutpraying,

We are glad you joined the site.

Are you asking for a parents perspective on the situation?  This board can give you that.

If you are looking for support for how to handle the other aspects of the situation your question would get a good response on the "Staying ... .  Board".

Let us know.

Yes I'm looking for a perspective from a family point of view. He has an amazing mom and her partner, two brothers and two sister in laws.

They don't understand the diagnosis or his behavior. They only see the "good" side of him. I was hoping someone out there has been through family therapy and can give some advice on how to get them to come to grips with this awful illness.

Thanks for getting back to us lostbutpraying,

Question... .  Has his family ever expressed any concerns for his behavior at home as an adolescent or young adult?

I appreciate your concern for your bf family.  What they do with the information or suggestions you gave them is up to them.  Have they reached out to you since you made the suggestions?

You could, if you believe it will be well received... .  give them a book... .  "The Essential Family Guide to BPD" by Kreger.
