Title: Has anyone heard of any of these rehabs in NYC?
Post by: cfh on February 05, 2013, 09:38:45 AM
We just found out that ds29 in jail will be able to switch his probation to NY on the condition that he enter into a long term residential facility (12-18 mo).

Since it has to be in NYC and since we can't afford anything private he will be interviewing for admission at

Odyssey House

Phoenix House

Samaritan Village

Palladia

Most will take his SSD as payment.

My biggest fear is that none of these places will accept him because of his MI.  All offer limited MH services and the main focus is substance abuse which at this point needs to be his main focus.

Any of them sound familiar?

How does it feel to have this decision made? You can focus on the next step in earnest now.

Are they close enough for you to visit? Will they work with you as a parent even though your S is an adult? That is so often my struggle with all the privacy laws and ideas that I am enabling my DD by investigating for her. Maybe this is different since court ordered.

Hope others have direct experience.

I'm very relieved that he will be back in NY because he's always more stable when he's closer to home.  The further away he gets the more psychotic he seems to get.

We cannot get involved at all because he is 29 and has to go through the admissions process himself.  I've called each one to get some general information but he has to do the rest himself.

We are going to be speaking with his lawyer today to ask outright "what if none of these places will take him?".

Oh if only I could calm down!

cfh,

I hope one of these places will take him, give him another chance.

Let us know what the lawyer says.

Good news that he can transfer his probation back to NY.

cfh:  I don't know of these places but is Bellevue Hospital a possibility.  I have a friend who's son suffered from both substance abuse and MI for many years. He was over 18 at the time and they could not admit him and he didn't want to go but the Dr. there admitted him.  I know he was there for quite some time, maybe a year or so but he came out the other side and is doing really well for the past 5 years.

I hope and pray that this is the case with your dear son.  If Bellevue isn't a possibility I can ask them if they ever looked at any of these other places.

He was once in the Bellevue ER but I didn't know they had a long term program.  I will look into it.  Thanks!

We just talked to the lawyer today and he has 2 years probation and must be accepted into one of these programs or it's violating his probation and they have to send him back to prison in CO.

None of the programs are ideal since they don't really address the MI but anything is better than nothing.

He's doing so much better in jail since they cut back on his meds and he is taking them as prescribed so maybe that will continue in one of these places.

I may have to learn to be his personal DBT coach.

I call myself a  'life coach' with DD, and she even seems to accept this when we are together and I am being her advocate. It seems to work for others too when I am calling on her behalf to check an appt time, etc. She has to approve this contact ahead, or tell them when I call to talk to me. DD has no internal calendar or clock of any kind.

My taking a DBT skills class, and all the validation practice, radical acceptance, etc sure helps me. Then my strenghth, courage, calmness under duress seems to 'rub off' on her. She refuses T for herself. As long as I let go of expectations this seems to be working (and I am in a healthy zone - fatigue does a number on the calm in face of distress part).
