Title: uBPDm makes me allergic to melodrama fiction?
Post by: DesertChild on February 07, 2013, 09:19:12 AM
A little bit more chatty, but I was wondering if anyone else shares this affliction. I shut down when I see melodrama, especially the empty stuff. Characters angsting for the sake of it for hours feels a little bit like a trigger for me for my mom's waif's moments.

Books like Les Miserable, the Brontes (all of them), and movies such as Platoon (which BTW, my Mom loves... .  because it's so angsty and sad... .  ) I can't stomach.

When I'm faced with a real person I don't react this way (Unless they do it for attention--and I know when they are), but with fiction, especially when it's over the top, I react badly and pretty much kick it back to the shelf. I really don't like it.

Nice topic... .  I bet it will get moved to the Lounge though.  *)

It sounds like you know better than to be manipulated by hyperemotionality. I agree that a lot of scripted drama works too hard to elicit emotional response and is blatantly ungenuine. A lot of people seem to enjoy being entertained this way, but it isn't fun for me, either.
