Title: Giving of ourselves Post by: morningagain on February 07, 2013, 04:59:23 PM "If a tiny spark of God's love already burns within you, do not expose it to the wind, for it may get blown out... . Stay quiet with God. Do not spend your time in useless chatter... . Do not give yourself to others so completely that you have nothing left for yourself."

Title: Re: Giving of ourselves Post by: Whatwasthat on February 08, 2013, 07:40:29 AM That's a great quote Michael. Thanks so much for posting it. I hadn't heard it before. I must hunt out more writing of St Charles Borromeo - he sounds inspirational! It shows that these issues of needing to make sure we give enough attention to our own care have been around for a very long time doesn't it? And clearly St Charles Borromeo seems to have regarded it as a vital issue. Did you ever learn that story about St Martin and the Beggar as a child? Sorry if I've mentioned it before - I'm a bit obsessed with it! The idea being that St Martin riding through a cold wintry night encountered a beggar who needed clothing and promptly used his sword to cut his own cloak in half - giving half to the beggar and keeping half for himself to ensure that neither of them froze. It was used as a way of explaining that we must help others who need it - but never to our own detriment - and as children we were guided to understand why it's never a good idea to give away 'the whole cloak.' It's not a lesson I've always been able to stick to in life (major understatement there!) but it's helpful to think of it at this stage when I'm trying to do better in this respect. Sending best wishes. WWT. |iiii Title: Re: Giving of ourselves Post by: maria1 on February 08, 2013, 08:07:57 AM Wow- just what I need. I have no faith in anything right now. Faith is so important wherever we find it. I'm going to hold onto that Michael, thank you. I hope you are doing OK. You posted it for you but I'm taking a spark for myself too

After reading the quote from St Charles Borromeo, I thought that he ought to be the patron saint for those of us who love/have loved someone suffering with BPD... . Maybe St Martin too |iiii maria - I know what you mean - it seemed at times my faith in God, in others, in myself was leveled along with everything else. I figure those must have been the times God carried me (like the footprints in the sand story) Michael |
