Title: EMDR therapy Post by: Cloudy Days on March 15, 2013, 09:12:27 AM My husband has been getting therapy for awhile and his therapist just started to do this EMDR therapy, where he thinks of his trauma and she has him move his eyes back and forth. Anyways, I looked up this therapy and I was trying to figure out if it has any side effects or after effects and it really diddn't seem like it. However, my husband seems to be really wound up after those sessions and he seems to have racing thoughts for a day or two afterwards like his mind was stimulated or something, thats how he described it. I asked his therapist and she didn't say anything one way or the other only that he will get worse before he gets better. And her advice was to just stay away from him after these sessions, not always easy to do in a small house.
Just wondering if this is normal. Him being wound up and having Racing thoughts, which do go away eventually. Title: Re: EMDR therapy Post by: Want2know on March 15, 2013, 10:51:11 AM I did EMDR, and it was pretty intense. I would guess because while the therapist is moving his fingers, he is also asking your husband to bring up the situation that is causing him stress, and bringing him through the feelings associated with it. I'm sure there is some lingering immediately afterwards until he has fully worked through the process.

It was more focused on memebers getting the Therapy rather than their SO's getting the therapy. I did see that it seems to bring up old memories for them and I also seen that it's not good for some people. After his first session he was very, very wound up and it took him sevral days to come out of it. My husband has a heck of a lot of trauma to get through so I wonder how long it will take before he gets to a point that it will bother him less. My fear is that he is one of the people that it shouldn't be used on.

Granted, she won't be able to tell you much, but what you tell her of your observations afterwards may help her to better understand if it's working or not.
