Title: DBT may not be option due to faith beliefs
Post by: murph33 on May 05, 2013, 12:59:00 PM
I have researched DBT and realized they used meditative practices as part of the therapy process. The meditation is tied to stuff that as a christian it's not an option for us. So now what? What alternates is there that have been just as successful anyone know?

DBT: combined with physical and meditation-like exercises to teach you how to regulate your emotions, tolerate distress and improve relationships.

Hey murph!

I understand that meditation is used in Buddhism, meditation itself is not tied to religious practices in any way. It's a technique used to calm down and relax. Don't let the word "meditation" give you religious connotations, it is merely a relaxation technique. If the word "meditation" is off putting to you, just substitute it for "mental relaxation technique". That's all it is, its not connected to any religion in any way. When you sit in a quiet pace, and focus on yourself, and attempt to relax, how does that go against any religious beliefs? What specifically about meditation (in the way that it is used in DBT) gives you the idea that it goes against your faith?

I agree with cska - meditation in the context of DBT is relaxation and not religious.

Perhaps look up some more information to make you comfortable that the kind of meditation / relaxation techniques used in the context of DBT has no religious connotations. It would be a shame to deny an effective treatment due to misunderstood religious practice. A bit like parents letting their kids die because their religion teaches not to allow them to receive medical treatment... .

Not saying you should meditate if you don't feel comfortable, but it would be news to me that Christianity would outlaw meditation (unless it's a denomination that also outlaws Rock Music and Harry Potter - in that case, please disregard my comment).

Good luck!

Meditation is just a term used to signify a deep state of relaxation.

It is NOT a religious practice.

Just as Yoga is primarily an exercise science.

Here is a link to Center for Disease Control... .  very much  a clinical, non-religious, secular entity.  Note there is no correlation/affiliation with any religious practice.
