Title: Schema modes results-now what?
Post by: musicfan42 on June 05, 2013, 06:01:26 AM
I did a schema modes test from www.schematherapy.com (if you want to do it, just go into "inventories" and you'll find it there).

But anyways, my 5 highest scores were vulnerable child, angry child, punitive parent, demanding parent/undisciplined child (they were about the same score), and healthy adult.

How do you reduce your score for vulnerable child? As mine was very high!

I also am not sure how to deal with the angry child. I use assertiveness techniques all the time but I still feel angry deep down... . what now?

I know about cognitive distortions etc but my punitive parent and demanding parent modes are still there! I feel a bit stuck, like I'm not sure what to do now.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Pick up a copy of "Reinventing your Life" by Jeffrey E. Young... . he is one of the developers of schema therapy, the book is on dealing with the schemas... . exactly what you are looking for. Its good and doesn't require a T.

Thanks charred... . I've heard of the book before however I don't really want to buy another psychology book (I have a few at home as it is!) If someone has a free pdf of the book though, please send it my way :)

I would like to hear from people who've managed to improve their schema modes-things that worked for them etc.

Its a $15 book... . and extremely good and on point... . a T is upward of $70 an hour, and would take a year to get through to many of the same findings/advice... . if they ever got you there. It isn't a typical psychology book, it is a quick chapter by chapter... . "you have these issues(schemas), do this real world stuff to correct it" book, kind of the antithesis of a psychology book, it is a fix it book. It IS a lot to spend to address major issues in your life.

I can see where you're coming from charred because as you say, $15 is not a lot of money for a good book. However, I feel a bit frustrated because I've already gone to therapy, I've bought several self-help books. It really is about the principle of the matter for me-I feel like I've been ripped off enough as it is. I feel like if anything, I need to make more use of the psychology books I've already bought without going out and buying another one. That being said, I appreciate your feedback on the book.

I am an avid reader though so should anyone have free information on the book, please pass it onto me :)
