Title: Husband awaiting diagnosis.. A little advice needed please
Post by: AngelFeathers on August 23, 2013, 08:01:51 AM
Hi, I'm confident my husband has BPD, he's had two initial consultations via the phone and will see a psychiatrist within two weeks. I've read lots on the subject but can't find much on the type of drugs that are likely to be prescribed. I understand this could be very different for different people, but is there a common treatment and if so how does it help? I know a lot will take place via counselling but I guess I'm hoping for a miracle here that treatment may make a big difference. Any advice will be appreciated. I'm in the UK by the way. Thank you. Xx

It's great that he's interested in getting some treatment.  Unfortunately, there is no miracle drug to treat this.  He may be prescribed drugs for some of the symptoms, anxiety, depression, etc. but there is no drug for BPD per se.

It's ok to hope for the best from his treatment.  But, you actually have a lot more control over your situation than just hoping for him to change.  You can actually change the dynamic of your relationship on your own, without any work or effort on his part.  It starts by examining your role in the relationship.  Have you had a chance to read the Lessons?

To my knowledge there are no drugs that will "cure" BPD.  Only strong commitment to getting better via participating in DBT Therapy which is specifically designed for BPD sufferers is proven to be helpful.

The drugs are usually prescribed to help manage some of the symptoms of BPD (Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Depression, etc.).

So he will most probably be prescribed medication depending upon what symptoms he exhibits.

I am sorry to hear that he is suffering and am also glad and proud that he is seeking help.  I am glad and proud that you are reaching out too.

Please understand that the effect of this disease on the partners who love them is extremely destructive too.  So, you will need to diligently and aggressively seek out your own wellness so you can be available for him.  It's like the airplane... . you need to put on the oxygen mask on yourself before you can help your child.

Do watch over your financial, physical and emotional well being.  Taking good care of yourself is not abandoning him, rather it is the kindest and the most loving thing you can do for him.

God bless.
