Title: DBT therapy, how to find?
Post by: lostandunsure on August 26, 2013, 04:35:56 PM
My wife is officially diagnosed with DBP, we both agree that it's the best fit we've found and the new psychiatrist diagnosed her with it before we even brought it up. He seems to be pretty good and my wife seems to connect about as well as she has with any of her previous doctors. So, we're hopeful that things can start moving forward.

He did recommend/prescribe DBT. He's going to look up a couple of programs in the area and get back to us. So, I have a few questions, if someone can help point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

  • Is there anything we should look for specifically in a DBT program? (warning signs for bad ones, things that help suggest good ones?)

  • Are there resources, or information out there to help me as a non understand better what DBT does so I can help with it?

  • Outside of DBT are there suggested resources I can point my wife to to help her with BPD. She's read some from several boards that are more geared towards non's supporting pwBPD and it has been discouraging for her, so we'd like to find something geared to her needs.

So, we're actually pretty happy with the new doctor, and we're happy that we finally have a diagnosis, now we're just trying to figure out next steps and see where they take us. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's is a website with resources for people with BPD:

*welcome*  You might want to look on the NAMI website for a family to family class in your local area.  While the BPD needs help with DBT the family can also help by learning about the illness and skills for coping.  The skills you can learn here are also invaluable.

Is it common for there to be a rather long waiting list for these programs?

The one "good" program, at least the only one that seems to follow the DBT practice, has a 6 month waiting list. Fortunately, my wife doesn't have a job so she is available any time, so that might help her get in sooner than that.
