Title: Have you read this book? Post by: chayka on September 18, 2013, 04:04:58 AM Hello folks!
Has anyone read Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder: A Family Guide for Healing and Change , by Valerie Porr? I was wondering if it would be suitable for people in my situation. My mum is in her seventies and has undiagnosed BPD. Like many people, she's not able to acknowledge that she has a serious problem. I'm not sure if this book is aimed mostly at the families of BPD sufferers who have been diagnosed and are receiving professional help, and I didn't want to spend money on a book that could be painful and frustrating to read. I already have all the pain and frustration I need in my life! :) Can anyone advise? Thanks, Chayka Title: Re: Have you read this book? Post by: Want2know on September 18, 2013, 04:55:11 AM Hi
Just wanted to share this link with you: https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=128777.10 We did do a book review here of it, and there are quite a few comments on that thread that you might be interested in reading. Having read quite a lot of the posts, I've decided that this is almost certainly not the book I need to be reading right now. It seems that the people who have found it useful are mostly parents of children with BPD; nearly all the adult children of BPD sufferers who commented found it a painful and unhelpful read. So I'll try something else instead. Thanks again! |iiii Title: Re: Have you read this book? Post by: GeekyGirl on September 18, 2013, 04:11:07 PM There are some other really good ones out there for children of people with BPD.
Two that I've gotten a lot from are Stop Walking on Eggshells (https://bpdfamily.com/book-reviews/stop-walking-on-eggshells.msg517974#msg517974), which had some good tools for communication and conflict management and Understanding the Borderline Mother (https://bpdfamily.com/book_review/christine_lawson.htm), which can be a triggering/painful read but is the best depiction of how my mother really is, and how to deal with her. Let us know what you end up reading, and what you think! Title: Re: Have you read this book? Post by: Lauzy on September 19, 2013, 12:57:28 AM I'm half way through Bon Dobb's When Hope is not Enough.
