Title: My daughter has been diagnosed with BPD
Post by: HollyW on September 30, 2013, 02:33:52 PM
Hello

I am looking for online support regarding dealing with my daughter who has been diagnosed with BPD.  I have been studying over the years... .Dr. David Burns, Pema Chodrun, Eckhart Tolle and intend to start reading 'stop walking on eggshells' by Paul T. Mason, MS and Rani Kreger.  I am tired and worn out and feel it would help me if I could talk to others who are struggling with this disorder.

Sincerely,

Holly

  and  *welcome*

I am sorry you are having such a difficult time.  I believe my mother has BPD, so I understand the confusion and frustration.

A parent's greatest wish is for their child, whatever their age, to be healthy and happy. When a child suffers from BPD, often not only is the child unhappy and unhealthy, but so is everyone who loves them. This mental illness severely affects everyone, creating drama and heartbreak, while also piling on the guilt and anxiety. Most parents search desperately for answers, and try all the gimmicks that popular culture tells us should work - only to face even more severe rages and acting out behavior.

There are answers though, and we are here to offer you the support and encouragement to help you reach those goals. There are things that can be done to stop making things worse and begin to make them better. A great place to start is with this set of resources:

What can a parent do? (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=114267.0) We look forward to seeing you on the Supporting a son or daughter suffering from BPD board (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?board=4.0) and hope you join us on this journey.

Please start with the link above 'What can a parent do?'  You will find a lot of information there.  How old is your daughter?  Has she ever received any treatment or therapy?  Do you have a support group or therapist for yourself?

Here are several good communication tools:

Welcome HollyW,

Just wanted to say hello and welcome to you.

Many also like the book, Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder, by Valerie Porr, available on Kindle, as well.

When you have a chance and feel comfortable, let us know more about your situation.

Hi HollyW, my daughter (20) has also been diagnosed with BPD. In the past 2 weeks she has been hospitalized twice for wanting to die, overdose of pills etc,. She is now with her dad as she refuses to speak with me or see me and this is ripping my heart out. I am going  for therapy and started reading the stop walking on eggshells book and it really helped me to see things in a different light. A have a friend whose hubby is a psychiatrist who specializes in BPD and he prefers himself the Valerie Porr book that someone mentioned above. I will get it,  but I have to order it online. Hang in there I know its hard as I am there right now. I do hope that I will see brighter days soon, that my daughter will reconnect with me and that I wont be attending her funeral as have been told in her case to expect more suicide attempts.

Hello HollyW and welcome!

Excerpt
I am looking for online support regarding dealing with my daughter who has been diagnosed with BPD.

You have found an excellent source of support here. I look forward to hearing more from you.

The book suggestions you have gotten are excellent. I am a fan of Tolle's book and think it is a good guide to changing our mindset which can help us, certainly, in dealing with our loved ones who have BPD.
