I am the parent of an 18 yr.old son who we thought this year was suffering from depression and anxiety.  Now we are suspecting BPD.  We are trying to educate ourselves, my husband and I, on this so I have just joined this group.  Looking for help, support, education on this roller coaster ride.

welcome Stanhope   You are definitely in the right place to learn and find support. Its not easy, I know as I have a 20 year old DD, and you said it right, when you said "roller coaster ride". I am relatively new at this, but can tell you, first and foremost, please take good care of yourself and do things for you as you will need to be strong. I have read books, am doing therapy and going to support groups. It frustrates me, as I am doing all this and my daughter is not doing much, but at least I am taking (trying to at least) care of myself. Hang in there you will get good support and insight here

Hi Stanhope!

*welcome*  I'm so happy you found this site.  I'm sorry you're son is suffering so much.  It's extremely difficult to sort through all the emotions that go along with helping a child cope with a mental illness.  Has your son seen a mental health professional?  It doesn't sound like he has an "official" diagnosis.  What are you seeing that causes you the most concern?

I'm sure you've already done some research, however, you may find this link helpful Video-What is Borderline Personality Disorder? (https://bpdfamily.blogspot.com/2010/09/video-what-is-borderline-personality.html).

"welcome" doesn't seem the right word, but glad you found the board.  we're still newbies w/ our DD who turned 19 today.  one thing that finally dawned on me today is that SHE suffers with this.  we are by-products of her suffering.  amidst all the chaos, roller coaster rides and turmoil i always seem to forget this is something she has and suffers with every minute of every day and not just us.  hang in there as we all say.  peace.

Your should try and get a professional opinion, because you say "suspicions"?

It is highly recommended to see if you can get a professional opinion. I have seen some people definitely make mistakes about such diagnosis in the absence of professional guidance.

Stanhope,

I would like to join the others in welcoming you to the parents board.  Is your son in any type of therapy or under the care of a psychiatrist yet?

If you look over to the right, there are links for communication tools and Lessons.

What happened recently that brought you to this site?  Do you have other children?

Please reember to take time out for yourself and take care.
