Title: In the news - child suing her parents for money for college
Post by: pullingmyhairout on March 06, 2014, 12:19:19 PM
Has anyone been following the case in New Jersey where an 18 year old is suing her parents for the last semester of her private high school and money to put her through college. Apparently she has engaged in high risk behaviors, drinking, not coming home etc and her parents told her if she couldn't follow house rules, to move out. She did and moved in with a friend and is now suing them to support her through college! Listening to her accusations of verbal and emotional abuse, and not very specific accusations of how her father was inappropriate with her reminded me of BPD behaviors and I had wondered if this might be a high publicity example of a high functioning BPD. Thankfully, the judge does not seem very sympathetic to her, denying her request for emergency support from her parents. Just kind of found it interesting, and wondered if anyone else noted the behaviors reading this... .

Yes I have to say I thought the same thing when I read about this... . she seems to have a very strong sense of entitlement... . seems like a very smart girl too... . I really wonder what kind of lawyer thought he had a case... . just a bit sad

I thought exactly the same thing. I've seen enough parents on these boards who have BPD kids that manipulated their way into "new family" situations. That never happened with my dd, but my best friend's son moved in with a family that tried to convince him to get emancipated. My friend had no money, unlike the parents of this girl in the news... . so there was no incentive to try to get child support.

Ugh, glad the judge is not sympathetic. Wonder how long the kid will last with her new family if they don't get any money?

Yes I saw the news, I was going to post something, thinking that this seemed very BPD like. Interesting, that the friend is a lawyer, so it's not really money out of his pocket, that he got Rachel drunk at 15, and one could question how good of a parent he is. One site I found myself on had numerous postings, some by younger people, maybe milleniums, who blame baby boomers for many ills, and that boomers owe them something. Whatever happened to honest work, a good work ethic, and making and paying your own way through life? We did it, they can, too. Does anyone remember the case a couple of years ago, where the father shot his daughter's laptop, when he found she had slammed him on facebook?

I thought the same thing and then I thought I hope my son doesn't see this because... . it's just the sort of thing he'd do.
