Title: Tips on choosing a good Therapist? Psychologist? Psychiatrist?
Post by: Regular_Joe on March 16, 2014, 03:08:43 PM
For some reason, I've had a difficult time in connecting with a therapist that I feel fits me. The ones I've been to have all been professional to be sure, but I haven't been able to "hit it off" with any of them, which leaves me feeling like I'm not progressing, and ultimately frustrated. I've been seeing Therapists, but am now looking at Psychologists. I'm also considering anti-depressants, which means a Psychiatrist (?). BTW, getting a new patient appointment in my city to see a Psychiatrist is re-DONK-ulous. Most have a 6-8 month waiting list.

Anyhow, getting decent mental health treatment is an exercise in futility it seems. Any suggestions appreciated!

Shopping around--trying one or two sessions to see if you are finding what you want is a good idea. I've had hits and misses that way.

Also, ask your local friends and family for recommendations. The first (and perhaps best) one I saw was found that way.

Regular_joe,

I tried various kinds of therapists throughout the years. It didn't really hit home for me until I met with a Psychologist, PsyD. I needed someone who could go very deep with me, that I could really trust to handle what surfaced when we did. Of course, I didn't realize this until after the fact. I also needed a psychologist who specialized in the psychodynamic theory to get me started; I needed the analytics and freedom to explore however I needed at first (broad and abstract view). I then later switched to Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) psychologist for continued practice breaking poor thinking patterns, stronger coping and interpersonal skills (short term goals). Now, I am back with a psychodynamic psychologist to finish the healing process and work out my root issues (i.e. feeling unlovable).

I compare my past failed efforts to like asking a nurse to do heart surgery.

I do not take any medication though. So, I don't need a Psychiatrist.

Hope this helps.
