Title: Explaining their Diagnosis?
Post by: ncmoms on April 10, 2014, 10:59:47 AM
Has anyone here actually tried to sit down with their child (my DD is 14) and explain what they've been diagnosed with and what that means?   My DD still contends that there's nothing at all wrong with her, and that it's everyone else that has problems.  She is refusing to go to the psychiatrist and any kind of therapy, and has stopped taking her mood stabilizer.  She is doing fairly well, except for school, which she refuses to go more often than she goes and is currently failing every subject!

I was wondering if trying to get her to understand what is going on in her brain might help her to be more agreeable to therapy.

I don't think I have every sat down to discuss this with her but she knows some how and maybe that is through her T or seeing the many books around my house. My dd16 use to resist going to therapy until we found a new T... . I took her and said just go one time and if you don't like her then you don't need to go back... . she came out of the appointment and said she didn't want to talk about it but that she would go back. That really started her journey to getting better... . I still think there are days she has miles to go but on the most part we are heading in the right direction... . more steps forward than backwards.

The T she had before really was not equip to deal with her... . did a lot of talk therapy and my dd hated it. Finding the right T is key.

Thanks, jellibeans.  I need to get back to trying to find more therapists for her to try out.  It is time consuming and expensive, as we all know.
