Title: Sibling who's clearly BPD
Post by: ropend on May 22, 2014, 04:35:01 PM
Thought I posted this here before.

What can be done about a sibling who lives three counties away and has the nerve to wake me up in the morning calling me (among other things) a leach when she knows I work two jobs and she doesn't have any?

First, when she starts the name calling, HANG UP! You don't have to listen. You can tell her you are hanging up, some people do, or not. Up to you. Second, can you turn the ringer off so that if someone calls you when you need to be sleeping you won't hear it? And just let it go to Voicemail?

Hi ropend,

That's a very unpleasant way to start your day. You can't change her behavior but there are definitely things you can change in your own behavior. I agree with Deb. If she starts abusing you, hang up. You can also tell her that you don't accept her behavior and tell her in advance that you're gonna hang up, but like Deb says that's completely up to you. Sometimes it's best to just hang up the phone to prevent yourself from getting dragged into a drama filled BPD discussion. If she keeps calling, you can choose to not pick up the phone or indeed turn the ringer off. Caller ID can help but they can also mask their number of course but when you get continuous phone calls, you can be pretty sure it's her.

I got badmouthed through the answering machine.

I've learned the hard way not to accept calls from her till I know what mood she's in.

Problem is she fills up the entire answering machine with her BS.

I would just hang up and not listen to her messages. It sounds like she is projecting herself onto you and that stuff will drive you crazy.

Or you could go the route I did,  buy a tract phone and give her that number to use and abuse. Just don't turn the ringer on and don't listen to the messages. When the voice mail gets full, she can't leave messages anymore.
