Title: anemia and personality changes?
Post by: SeaSprite on August 25, 2014, 12:29:25 PM
I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience, or heard of it?

I know correlation is not causation, so the timing could be a complete coincidence, likely is, given her age at onset. But I still wonder... .

My d16 was a pretty normal kid, cheerful, enthusiastic, a really good student, she developed debilitating anemia in 7th grade, and her life went downhill. She has it under control with iron supplements, but she still stays on the low side.

Things that were minor before, like her perfectionism and the tendency to lie about little things to keep her "perfect" image seemed managable and like things that she was learning to improve.

And after the anemia, she just crashed... .School refusal, suicide threats, cutting... .

It seems like there was something switched in her brain after that that hasn't resolved.

Has anyone else seen symptoms appear after illness, or am I reaching?

SeaSprite, I don't have a lot of time to give you much info today, but if you have time, do a Google search on PANDAS. My dd's school counselor suggested she be tested (after some serious issues last spring), and I had asked her pediatrician about this years ago, and was dismissed. I asked her to be tested last spring, and he took it more serious. She ASO titer was normal, so she tested negative.

I will check back in later to discuss.

Hope you are having a better day.

I think what is hard for us parents is to really know when our kids are sick. My dd17 cycles through illnesses that are not real... .usually when she is stressed. It is hard for me to know when she really is struggling with her health. Also look up POTS... .Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome... .
