Title: that's just your pseudologia fantastica, my dear

Taken from Scott Snyder, M.D., (1986).  Pseudologia Fantastica in the Borderline Patient, American Journal of Psychiatry, 143:10, page 1287-1289, October 1986.

"One extreme form of lying is pseudologia fantastica, or pathological lying.  It is observed frequently as a form of acting out in patients with antisocial or borderline personality.   Pseudologia fantastica is a syndrome characterized by a superstructure of some actualities erected on a foundation of fantasy.”

"It is often difficult to determine whether the lies are an actual delusional distortion of reality or are expressed with the conscious or unconscious intent to deceive.   The patient's need to produce narcissistic gratification and an increase in self-esteem is often key to the development of pseudologia fantastica.   The fantasy is quickly dropped when the patient is confronted with contradictory evidence.   However, patients with pseudologia fantastica seem compelled to act our their fantasies repeatedly.”
