Hello, Ed1954 & I'd like to join corraline in welcoming you to this site, and to encourage you to read the links that she provided for you. Welcome, also, to the Parenting a Son or Daughter suffering from BPD Board

I'm really sorry that you are having troubles finding a Psychiatrist in the New York, New Jersey area. This link should help you with that: The National Alliance on Mental Illness (http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=your_local_nami&Template=/CustomSource/AffiliateFinder.cfm) has a search bar where you can enter your location, and could give you resources convenient to you, and all sorts of other information. Since you mention that she has BPD and also substance abuse problems, I do want to mention that a Dual Diagnosis Program would be something you might want to look into. It was the only Program that diagnosed my own adult (37) son's BPD and treated it correctly, and set him on the path of recovery; almost 18 months later he is still clean and sober (from a Heroin addiction) and doing really well.

Like corraline said, let us know more of your daughter's situation so we can guide you better, Ed1954... .

Hi Ed1954,

I'd like to join Corraline and Rapt Reader in welcoming you to the Parenting Board! *welcome*

I am sorry to hear about your DD22's BPD and addiction issues. You are fortunate to live in the NYC/Jersey area. I think you'll find a lot of very good resources there. I live on the West Coast, and we don't have much to offer here, so if my DD17 ever needs hospitalization again, or an RTC, I would be inclined to research your area too. My brother lives there, and he had to get help for his s-i-l last year, after a suicide attempt. I will ask him what resources they found for her and get back to you.

I agree with Rapt Reader that a dual diagnosis program sounds like it would make the most sense for your DD.  In addition, I would suggest you make sure whatever psych doc or therapist you choose is experienced with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Hang in there! You're not alone!
