Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Mutt on November 29, 2014, 09:12:43 PM Thank you Pingo! Nah I don't mind science and technical stuff. I'll take a look at your suggestions on Amazon. I feel like I'm at stage 5 with detachment. 2015 is around the corner ( 2013, half of 2014 are write offs lol years that I'd rather soon forget ) and I'm really looking forward to the New Year. It's time to leave the past in the past and start tackling life. I feel great and I felt like I had some bouts of minor depression with the separation. I feel like the mind, heart and spirit are aligned.
I have plans in mind for myself and my kids that I want to get done as well as other plans with work etc. I'm so happy I found bpdfamily and mindfulness, detachment really helped me with coping and moving forwaed. There's profound wisdom with Zen and I'm interested in learning more. I owe it to Zen Buddhism for changing my life and how I think and react to people in life. Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Pingo on November 29, 2014, 09:41:22 PM That's awesome Mutt, a new year and a new beginning for both of us! It's funny, I have read many books about mindfulness and Buddhism over the years but I found out this year that I had to do the dirty work underneath before I can expect to move into this detached place. What I had thought was doing the work was trying to bypass the pain. It's been quite the year! I'm still a work in progress but moving forward, looking forward to 2015 and discovering all that is in store for us! |iiii

Also, if you've never read it, Siddhartha is a great and short book. It's the story of Buddha and it helps to justify mindfulness, letting go and being simple. Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Grey Kitty on November 29, 2014, 10:11:47 PM I will also recommend "Peace is every step."
For better or for worse, I've done very little reading. I've listened to a lot of Dharma talks, many on my own retreats, in a sangha that met for meditation and a recorded talk, not having a teacher, and others downloaded off the internet. I've also read some of "I AM THAT" Dialogues of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj I do not know that he considered himself Buddhist. I do know that my Buddhist teacher described everything he said as being pure Dharma. I went back to daily meditation recently, if only 15 minutes or less. Now that I'm back from my trip I'll resume--I missed a few days. Mutt, I hope you are practicing as well as reading--The reading is more enjoyable for me, but the practice is more important. Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Mutt on November 29, 2014, 10:40:26 PM Great recommendations! Pingo she I got here I came across a Brené Brown quote early to lean into the pain. I'm happy that I did.
Grey Kitty I practice Mindfulness nearly on a daily basis. I'm interested in continuing. Do you mean mediation? Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Perfidy on November 30, 2014, 12:29:16 AM How to See Your Self as You Really Are by Tenzen Gyatso. Any book written by this man is a wealth with regard to personal development. This one has meditative reflection included.
Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Perfidy on November 30, 2014, 12:40:21 AM I've read more than 25 books in the past year. Everything from Dale Carnegie to Socrates. Only a couple fiction books. Everything else has been philosophy, psychology, self awareness, and spirituality. Everything from Ospensky and Gurdjieff to M Scott Peck. If I had the time I would read every book ever written just to see what our potential is. Books are good. Books are knowledge. Someone said that every time an old man dies a library burns down.

Ditto! Books have possibly become an addiction for me lol. I just asked the library to order two new books for me today and I get such a thrill when they finally arrive! Almost all have been psychology books this last year, I feel like I've received a great education! Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Grey Kitty on November 30, 2014, 08:17:27 AM I've listened to many Dharma talks by Michele McDonald, both recorded and on retreats with her. If you spent time in your car, she wrote an audio book "Awake at the Wheel: Mindful Driving". I don't have enough suitable driving time in my life to purchase it, and give a first-hand recommendation/review, so I found one on the net here (http://www.wildmind.org/blogs/book-reviews/awake-at-the-wheel-mindful-driving-by-michele-mcdonald).
I also have a lot of respect for Pema Chödrön. I haven't read any of her books, so I can't recommend anything specific for you. Grey Kitty I practice Mindfulness nearly on a daily basis. I'm interested in continuing. Do you mean mediation? My practice is simple sitting (mindfulness) meditation. Over the years I've done two 10-day retreats, a few shorter ones, and my newly restarted daily practice. Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: boatman on November 30, 2014, 08:51:27 AM I'd recommend any book written by Cheri Huber, particularly The Fear Book and The Depression Book. Both were eye opening for me. Wherever You Go, There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn; Iron John, by Robert Bly; and The Art of Possibility, by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander. I've reread these books several times and have found them tremendously helpful. LuckyJim Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Aussie JJ on December 02, 2014, 09:27:15 PM Interesting topic Mutt,
For me I'm trying all the ACT stuff and implementing on a daily basis. Some of its still hard changing old patterns, essentially mindfulness again with this model. A fair bit becoming second nature now. www.bookdepository.com/Happiness-Trap-Dr-Russ-Harris/9781845298258 www.bookdepository.com/Act-Made-Simple-Dr-Russ-Harris/9781572247055 This is really interesting to me, the toltec south american stuff. Essentially much the same as mindfulness in many regards however I like the values in these books. Very simple, basic down to earth wisdom. www.bookdepository.com/Four-Agreements-Don-Miguel-Ruiz/9781878424310 www.bookdepository.com/Fifth-Agreement-Don-Miguel-Ruiz/9781878424617 There is a book on radical acceptance that I borrowed form the library, dont know what its called. This was very good as well. This below I havent had the chance to read, I am going to buy it and a few others in a couple months when settlement is through and I have some cash again. www.bookdepository.com/Thinking-Fast-Slow-Daniel-Kahneman/9780141033570 www.bookdepository.com/Power-Habit-Charles-Duhigg/9781847946249 Yes I do order a lot of books from that website I have found it to be pretty much in the middle of being expensive and being reasonable. Most of the time the prices they have are round about the same as many others and they have free shipping. AJJ. Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Mutt on December 04, 2014, 11:09:36 AM I appreciate all of the recommendations everyone! Mindfulness, Buddhism and Zen helped me with healing. I wanted to ask the old fashion way here. What's everyone reading that helped them? Thank you.
2015 is around the corner. I feel like I'm stage 5 of detaching. To quote one of my favorite songs. Sometimes you kick. Sometimes you get kicked. It's time to kick. I'm excited for 2015 and beyond :) Title: Re: Book suggestions. Buddhism, Zen, Mindfulness. Post by: Pingo on December 04, 2014, 11:28:39 AM I appreciate all of the recommendations everyone! Post by: Blimblam on December 13, 2014, 11:52:43 PM One thing really interesting about Zen Buddhism is always see the ouroboros symbol associated with it. If one follows the symbol of the ouroboros it can illuminate much.
