Title: BPD or Narcissism/NPD?
Post by: Gimme Peace on December 05, 2014, 12:26:16 PM
My pwBPD has traits of BPD but the more I read about NPD/Narcissism it seems that fits him more. He appears to be a "vulnerable narcissist".

He definitely has thinking processes like BPD but most of his behaviors seem NPD. Very similar traits.

Traits:

Silent rages

Easily offended

Toxic shame if criticized

Must have own way or angered

Black and white thinking

dysphoria/dissociation

TOTAL lack of empathy or lip service empathy

Anyone else experienced with this?

What are the major differences between BPD and NPD?

hi Gimme Peace. both disorders fall into the same category, called Cluster B. they do express the same way to some extent, though they have different underlying motivators. my stbxw certainly has a alot of N expressions mixed in with her B. we have two useful pages here: What is the relationship between BPD and narcissism (NPD)?  (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=90388.0), and Dealing with narcissists by reinforcing the positive (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=120342.0).

hope that helps!

My wife is undiagnosed but has quite a few characteristics of the BPD waif.

After doing a lot of reading and obsessing on figuring her out, I have learned to just let the need for certainty, definitions and labels pass.  I am now just focusing on the particular behaviors that cause problems and strategies to handle them.  At the same time, I'm trying to make sure I'm taking care of and nurturing myself.

I think a lot of the emotional techniques here would work for NPD/BPD, heck even just regular folks who are extremely upset or emotional about something.
