Title: So many books...
Post by: Shell Shocked on February 22, 2015, 10:25:18 AM
If you were going to recommend one book to someone, what would it be?

I read When the Ship has No Stabilizers first and although it was not a "happy" ending it did give me some perspective.  I am currently reading The Essential Family Guide to Borderline Personality Disorder: New Tools and Techniques to Stop Walking on Eggshells.

Where would you go from there?  I have another couple weeks before we meet with the psychiatrist to give medical history.  I am making notes on concerning behaviors and events and taking notes on questions to ask.  Any other advice?

Thank you!

I consumed so much info about BPD so quickly that it's difficult for me to look back and recall what was best.  I do know that I found the following book to be pretty good: "Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder: A Family Guide for Healing and Change" by Valerie Porr.  I suppose to mix up your routine you can watch some YouTube videos about BPD.  A lot of the videos are only mediocre, but there are a few good ones for sure.

Hi again Shell Shocked!

Given that your daughter is 16 I would recommend highly:

BPD in Adolescents by Blaise Aguirre (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=65571.0)

For a parent my absolute top recommendation would be "Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder" by Valerie Porr.

She has a child with BPD herself and it is a book that you can dip in and out of.

I have learned a lot from it.

I also found a book called "Boundaries" very helpful but that is because I have a particular difficulty in that area.

I'm currently reading "I don't have to make everything all better"

I think Valerie Porr is an excellent starting point and overview with lots of helpful advice.

My recommendation is based on my assumption that you are looking for ways to present your daughter's behaviors to the psychiatrist and how those behaviors lead you to believe she is exhibiting the traits of BPD.  A more clinical understanding based on information by experts in the treatment of BPD will give you a more focused approach.  Aguirre is the head of the DBT unit for adolescents at Harvard McLean Hospital.

To the best of my knowledge he is the leading expert in Treatment for BPD in adolescents in the US.

Hope that can help you make an informed decision based on what you are looking for.

Here is a review on Porr's book:

If you only have 2 weeks to prepare you might want to consider the length of Porr's book.  It is cumbersome to get through and if I remember correctly the focus is more on helping parents help their children than it is on helping get a diagnoses so that a treatment plan can be established.

May want to get this book as a "next on my list to read".
