The medication prescribed depends on the individual. Some medication may work for one pwBPD, but may not be as effective for another.
My bf has taken many different medications, such as mood stabilizers, anti psychotic medication, anti-anxiety, and medication for ADHD. Currently, my bf takes a SSRI and it helps him with periods of depression. A couple of times he ran out of his medication and there was a huge difference when he was off of it. He was extremely volatile off of his medication. Title: Re: Drugs for BPD Post by: Cole on March 21, 2015, 08:26:22 PM My wife is officially dx as rapid cycling bipolar 2 by her P, though numerous T's she has seen insist she is BPD and she fits the DSM criteria perfectly.
So, she is on depakote and wellbutrin for bipolar disorder. They do seem to help with the BPD symptoms. He was originally diagnosed with depression after the event that I believe precipitated his crash and no longer being high functioning BPD up until that point. He also has a history of depression like behavior in his past. The depression meds help the depression, but not the BPD symptoms much, other than helping him sleep better which makes him slightly better able to cope. All the reading I've done leads me to believe that because BPD is a personality disorder, medications do very little to help. I could maybe see anti anxiety meds helping during a dysregulation, but the person must be willing to take it at that point, and I know what a struggle that was for my husband, even with an agreement to take it on my request... .
Title: Re: Drugs for BPD Post by: maryy16 on March 21, 2015, 09:58:36 PM My husband is on Prozac and Buspar. He has been taking them for about 10 years. Do they help? Yes and no. I found that the frequency of dysregulation decreased, but the intensity was the same.
In other words, my H used to have incidents of dysregulation pretty much every day. There were no lulls. After medication, his episodes decreased to maybe once every two weeks. BUT, when he went "off", the rages were just as powerful as before medication. So, yes, in my case, medication helped, but it is not a "cure" by any means. |
