Hi moms and dads!

I know some of you are overwhelmed by the cost of mental health care and I wanted to pass this information to you all. 

If your child has a qualifying long-term diagnosis, including mental health, your child will qualify for Medicaid.   Qualifying diagnosis include Major Depressive Disorder and mood disorders.   I believe almost all of our kids have these in their list of diagnosis.

This Medicaid is available under the Children with Disabilities Act and is not dependent on your salary. Medicaid will cover a ton of mental health care including RTF.  They can act as either primary or secondary insurance, but not tertiary.  I had it for my daughter and they covered all copays  and deductibles as well as the full bill for RTF.  Medicaid can be up to 90 days retroactive.  Meaning that they will pay bills up to 90 days before the date of application.  Make sure you request that when you sign up

If you are interested please go to your county website and apply.  Here's what you will need:


A scanner (You will be asked to scan in your documents, however, the information can be copied and mailed if you don't have one).

Drivers license for all adults in the house

Birth certificates and social security cards for everyone in the house.

Last paystubs for everyone (Again, they will not judge your salary since you are only applying for a "disabled" child, but they want it anyway)

In the notes section at the end of the application explain that why you are applying and include the diagnosis, psychiatrist contact info and last hospital stay info

Do you know if this is the same as declaring a child medically dependant?

No, this is just to ensure that your child has the best medical and mental health care that you can give.  I had private insurance for my daughter but her psychiatrist recommended a treatment (home based therapy) that was only covered by Medicaid and told me how to go about applying for her.  It is exactly the same as applying for any other child who needs Medicaid except with the disability act they could not take our salary into consideration.

From my experience, this requires qualifying with a disabling condition when applying for the medicaid. In our particular case, gd9 is covered by medicaid since dh and I are custodial grandparents. This is considered 'kinship foster care' for some other assistance from our county.

I was able to get Medicaid for my son regardless of my income or assets in PA, but not when I moved to NJ. What state are you in?

I easily forget that this does vary by state. I am in CO.

I was also in PA during that time.  I can't even imagine how I would have been able to afford all the care my daughter needed without help. 

Now that I have looked at several states Medicaid eligibility I have found huge differences among state coverage.  For instance, NC has an income limit of 72,000 for a family of 4.  I think it would be to a persons benefit to look at their state eligibility or call their local office to speak with someone about eligibility.

I'm so very glad I decided to hedge my statement with "may".
