Title: advice for adult child Post by: librarymama on May 04, 2015, 04:45:45 PM Hi, I believe by 26 year old son has BPD. He has never been diagnosed; only diagnosed as ADHD and OD. He has been a difficult child since he was 8. So, I've been living with this 'stuff' for a long time. He doesn't live at home but has dropped out of school and ran out of money. He wants to move to Florida with his dog and all his furniture. He has no plans but feels he needs a new start. We've always been close enough to support him and help him get out of trouble. I'm worried about this move. I want to help him think it through without hurting him. Thoughts?

I'm so glad to have you here with us on the Parents Board. Welcome to the family! I'm sorry to learn that your son is struggling and not able to be independent. Guiding our adult children through the decision making processes can be difficult. We can recommend validating his feelings and then guiding him through his own decision making using validating questions. Does this sound like something that you would want to look into? The magical thinking is difficult to combat. lbjnltx |
