Title: I think Mom is uBPD -- could I have it?
Post by: acs73 on May 14, 2015, 11:58:57 AM
I have recently realized my Mother is likely BPD. I am hyper aware of the characteristics and am determined to break the cycle. Is it common for a child that was raised by a BPD to have it as well?

I think many of us have traits or emotional  my-issues  due to being raised by pwBPD. I have hermit and waif traits. Having traits or feelings which may seem "BPD-ish" doesn't mean that we have a full-blown disorder.

Hi acs73,

Many children of BPD parents find themselves struggling in their adult lives with BPD-like traits. As Turkish mentions, this doesn't necessarily have to mean that they have BPD as well. Often it is learned behaviors and/or coping mechanisms that were needed in childhood but might not serve us so well anymore in our adult lives. Fortunately these learned behaviors can also be unlearned or at least better managed through hard work as evidenced by many member accounts on here.

You say that you are hyper aware of the characteristics and are determined to break the cycle. What BPD characteristics do you recognize in your mother? Are there any of her characteristics that you also recognize in your own behavior?
