Title: Looking for support... my 19 year old daughter has BPD and is currently in the hospital
Post by: sagebrush on June 10, 2015, 11:11:45 AM
Hi,

My 19 year old daughter is currently in the hospital on a 5250 (2 week hold).  She has BPD and this is the first time she's been hospitalized.   I am trying to find a support group in my area if possible.

Hi sagebrush,

Welcome to the Parent's Board, we are happy you decided to post.

I'm sorry to learn that your daughter is in the hospital, is she alright?  Do you want to write about what happened that she is in the hospital?

For meet ups and learning the NEA-BPD has a program called Family Connections.  You can go to their website and inquire about the next session that may be in your area.  NAMI is not BPD specific and do have groups that meet made up of families of the mentally ill.

We are here 24/7 and understand the trials of having a child/adult child that suffers with BPD.  We are here to educate one another, support one another and share our stories.

I hope that you will be a frequent visitor here.

I am here to support you. My son is 44 and recently tried to hurt himself by trying to surgically removing a cyst with a knife. Is self-injury part of your daughter's pattern? I hope the hospital will help. What can I do for you specifically.  Emotional support is my strength. I find affirmations are my best friend in the middle of a crisis. If it were not for my faith I could not have made it this far. Do you go to any support groups? I love Alanon even thought my son does not drink anymore.

May I ask if I may reference God in my posts. I find strength in my belief in a power greater than myself. Let me know.

Welcome Sagebrush---my daughter is currently 27, diagnosed with BPD, depression and hypobipolar.  She has been in therapy since she was 16, and was hospitalized once about four years ago.   I can still remember how scary that was for my family, but also it was a comfort to know she was in a safe place and getting help.  I have found lots of support here, and I hope you do also.   I have done the Family to Family classes that were previously mentioned by someone else, and although not BPD specific, I found support in my community from others who were dealing with mental illness.  Please let us know what you need, and we will try to help if possible.  :)  To give you hope, my daughter is now doing very well, living on her own and I have to say that I give credit for part of that to the skills, lessons, tools etc. that I found here.  Best wishes for all of you, you are not alone.
