Title: Self-Mutilate Post by: GirlsCanDoMath on September 06, 2015, 09:43:30 AM Hello! I am currently reading "Understanding the Borderline Mother" and one of the characteristics is Self-Mutilation. My uBPDm did this as a child (banged her head against a wall repeatedly, and pick her legs full of scabs), but I haven't really seen this behavior in her adulthood. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is it common that they grow out of it? Thank you B. Title: Re: Self-Mutilate Post by: Kwamina on September 06, 2015, 10:22:11 AM Hi GirlsCanDoMath
Some people with BPD 'mellow out' as they get older. Perhaps that's what happened with your mother. Another thing that comes to my mind is that certain behaviors can be used as coping mechanisms to deal with stress or difficult feelings. One's the stress and/or difficult feelings are gone, there is less need for these coping mechanisms. Do you think this could be the case with your mother as well? Would you say she has less stressors in her life and/or struggles less with difficult emotions? PS. I love your screenname! :) |
