Hi, I am new to the forum. My son who is 25, was diagnosed with BPD a year ago. The traits were there for about 5 years before his diagnosis - mood swings, my having to walk on egg shells so as not to upset him. However around 13 months ago he went to the doctors with depression was prescribed anti-depressants and then the volcano began to erupt! He began to self harm, was actively suicidal, and knives were waved. A hospital admission followed where he was diagnosed. When he was discharged from the psychiatric hospital my son then lived with me and my partner of 5 years, and it was rather like being held hostage. He began seeing a DBT therapist weekly and had improved greatly. Our relationship was improved and he was coping with life. There had been one self harm attempt within 4 months which he regretted and got back on track. He started working and then moved out to live with friends in April this year. since July it has got steadily worse. This week, which is exactly a year since first hospital admission he cut himself and ended up back in hospital. He is out now and here we are again. I'm sorry to hear about your son's regression into self harm and suicidal thoughts. This is the hardest thing for us, as parents, to calmly endure and respond accordingly to... .the stakes are so high. Does your son have a follow up plan after being released from hospital for continued therapy and medication monitoring? Do you have a safety plan in place with your son should he feel suicidal or want to engage in self injury again? lbj |
