I quickly read his other books. Though I was the only child of a single parent, I could relate to the shadow of mental illness and abuse Conroy wrote about in the thinly veiled fiction about his family. The likely NPD and violent father, the different roles he and his siblings played in a narcissistic family dynamic. The mentally ill sibling who ended up taking his own life. Conroy's own struggles with severe depression and sometimes suicide ideation well into adulthood.
He made a sort of peace with his father towards the later years. I haven't checked in a while, but noticed that her wrote one last book, a final visit to his childhood. Thinking about picking it up soon. |
