Title: Psychiatric evaluation
Post by: wundress on November 18, 2015, 04:42:12 PM
My partner is currently waiting for a psych assessment. We are in the UK so I imagine that the interviewing process may be somewhat different to in the US.

From the reading I have done so far it seems that a diagnosis is easier to make when input is given from a family member due to the patient not knowing or realising a lot of their own behaviour?

My partner has agreed to me going to the appointment but she doesn't want me to give my input. In some ways I see her point that if I give input and it influences in anyway the diagnosis then my partner may well blame me for it. On the other hand it would be easier to treat and to get the right support if a diagnosis was reached.

We struggle over here to get BPD diagnosed. In fact the last gp my partner saw refused to get her referred to the psych team as she doesn't believe BPD exists! Trying to get any support after diagnosis is equally challenging.

Probably best to ask if you can speak to the evaluator alone.  That way you can say what you feel like saying without worrying about your partner listening.

Your partner should also have time alone with the evaluator.

Describe behaviors that you have observed... .and let the evaluators do the rest.

Best of luck!
