Title: Register or Not ?
Post by: Bright Day Mom on April 16, 2016, 02:52:04 PM
I received a  letter from my school district outlining a program through our twp. police "Special Needs Registry" and wanted to get the opinions of other parents of their feelings.  The program would include providing photo of child, as well as identifying information, dx, etc.

In return, the family receives a decal to display on the front entry door to our home, which would alert any first responders to some degree of special needs.

I personally have mixed feelings. First, is this "label" in my d's best interest? I feel we try so hard to be accepted as people in this world.  Would seeing the decal every time you open / close the door piss her off to her medical condition, which she is working VERY hard to overcome.  Second, my D has never run away (knock wood).  Third, she has never become violent. Lastly, in the (5) hospitalizations, each time we were able to calm the situation and bring her to the hospital willingly, never once having to call police and /or first aid.

I welcome all opinions as I am just unsure what to do... .

Thank your for reading, have a "Bright Day"!

I'm not a parent of a child with BPD, but I am a parent of two. As such, I hear that your concerns are valid. Do you have a good therapist you've been working with whom you can talk to about the validity of the program? It seems to me that this is an alert for first responders not to overreact. I also hear that your daughter is not violent, and that you've been able to handle things thus far.The school district is going to paint things with a bureaucratic broad brush (I'm dealing with this with my S6 and counseling, even though several other kids are more the problem in his class). I drew a boundary and asked questions (which surprised the bureaucrats). Can you get more info on this? I got some resistance intially from a drone, but was able later to connect with someone who answered my questions.
