Title: Book Recommendation Post by: bpdmom1 on April 22, 2016, 09:17:23 PM Not sure this is the right place, but I've been reading (actually listening to the audio book) "The Body Keeps Score". It is about trama. It discusses what is going on it the brain, discusses medication, and different types of therapies and how well they work.
It has been very insightful to me when it comes to my BPD daughter who was adopted at age 11 months and then at the age of 11 had a traumatic injury. It was recommended to my by the boarding school my daughter is attending. They did a Trauma Week where patients listed all their trauma from birth through age 17. Their definition of trauma was anything that was less than nurturing. So it could encompass all kinds of situations. They spent that week going over these and breaking them down, how it made him feel, how it changed him. Can you imagine working out all that as a young adult? He felt very fortunate to do it and was super-impressed by the doctors facilitating it. I'm sure the body-brain connection there is HUGE. I tend to think that one of the helpful things that will result from our decade-plus war in the Middle East will be incredible research in PTSD. Glad you found it!
Title: Re: Book Recommendation Post by: bpdmom1 on April 23, 2016, 09:22:52 PM We did a three day parent workshop through my BPD daughter school. We formed groups and focused on our own traumas. Some appeared very small, but affected them none the less. I think we only scratched the surface. I'm starting to think that a lot of the mental illnesses are actually trauma based.

Title: Re: Book Recommendation Post by: lbjnltx on April 24, 2016, 08:03:05 AM I was told "trauma is stored in the body at the cellular level". Scary to even think about this for our very sensitive children. The circumstances of living in this world are fraught with events that they can experience as traumatic:
first day of school loss of a pet loss of a grandparent moving breakup with a boy/girlfriend bullying invalidation finding out Santa Claus isn't real Looking at the world through their eyes helps us understand their pain. lbjnltx If you would like to add your thoughts to the Book Review board please do so here: https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=40285.90 Post #90 at the top of page 10 is where you will find another member's comments on this book. |
