Title: Experience with Therapeutic Boarding Schools
Post by: 473harman on September 22, 2016, 11:16:06 AM
We just placed our 16 yo dd in a therapeutic boarding school. She was in a short term facility over the summer that specializes in BPD and DBT and they recommended this school. She's there now just a week and our first parent call ended in hysterics on how she is backtracking and how much she hates it. Is this normal? By now means did our family sessions end well over the summer, but she seemed happier there. Any insight is appreciated.

My daughter attended a recommended therapeutic boarding school.  I don't think it is uncommon for the first number of months to be an adjustment.  Some of the girls didn't make it through the program, mine being on of them.  I still feel like it was a great program.

What made her leave the program, and how was it upon her return? Thanks for replying

My D isn't in a boarding school, but is in residential placement and attends a therapeutic high school.  My experience has been there is a HUGE adjustment period for everyone, parents included.  Our experience with residential has been a positive one.  It took my D a long time to get to her rock bottom and be placed residential and as I see it will take a lot of work / effort to get where we'd like her to be. The key is to keep at it.  Good luck
