Title: a good read
Post by: earlgrey on October 28, 2016, 09:52:34 AM
I'm going to have plenty of reading time soon (hospital stay + post op) and I would be keen to learn of any personal recommendations for reading.

I know bpdfamily has an approved reading list, and I hope my asking for personal 'likes' will not go against any forum rules.

So if you have any suggestions on the world of BPD, NPD, PDs in general, attachment, (Co-D I'm pretty good on), even novels that seem relevant I would be keen to hear your ideas.

Many thanks EG

Personally, I'd avoid getting to indulgent in the literature specifically surrounding these disorders, but that's just where I'm at. Reading Derrida or some other deconstructionist work might offer a cool perspective. And of course, both Freud and Lacan say some interesting things if you're willing to look beyond their biases to a certain degree and reflect on the core principles they try to establish. Kleinian object relations would be a close theoretical survey of all the attachment stuff—considered highly topical when thinking about cluster b disorders. But all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. Modern neuropsychology (and neuroscience) has not even gotten close to confirming any of these postulations.

As for fiction, one relatively new book comes to mind: You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine, by Alexandra Kleeman.

And there are plenty more... .

I'm currently reading "The mindful path to self-compassion" by Christopher Germer.

Hey earlgrey,

Here are some books that I've found helpful, even though they don't address BPD directly:

1.  Iron John, by Robert Bly;

2.  Wherever You Go, There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn;

3.  Project Personal Freedom, by Kingsley Gallup; and

4.  Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis (a novel).

Hi earlgrey,

I just finished Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns. The story of how, Abraham Lincoln, an unknown country politician led the nation through the Civil War.

I'm halfway through Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. Check out her Ted Talk

I've been dipping in and out of Flappers and Philosophers: an anthology of F. Scott Fitzgerald short stories. Light Relief

If you're interested in finding out more about BPD treatment and diagnosis. BPD Borderline Personality Disorder: A Clinical Guideby John G. Gunderson.

Schema Therapy: Reinventing Your Life: The Breakthrough Program To End Negative Behaviour And Feel Great Again by Jeffrey E. Young

Hope the op goes well

All the best

Another book that I like is The Art of Possibility, by Rosamond Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander.  Worth checking out!  LJ
