Title: Seeking Resources and hope
Post by: Hope2017 on January 31, 2017, 10:01:33 AM
I have a close family member who was diagnosed with BPD several years ago following a crisis situation that involved lying about incidents that had potential legal consequences. We believed we were past the worse, but recently found out the lying never really stopped and now this much-beloved person is facing legal consequences again (lying about a crime that never actually occurred) There is a small child involved in the situation and the stress is making my entire family physically ill, not to mention the emotional impact. We need help in helping this beautiful person.

Hi Hope2017,

*welcome*

I'd like to welcome you to  bpdfamily. I'm sorry to hear that your family is going through a difficult time. It helps to read as much as you can about the disorder, there's a reason why a loved one acts the way that they act and it helps to normalize it. I'm not saying that lying is OK, a pwBPD will dissociate or alter reality to match their our of place feelings. I used to get upset at my ex wife because she wasn't telling me the truth, but I know now that she has low self esteem, low self worth, self loathes, has chronic feelings of shame and she'll alter reality because she doesn't have a strong sense of self.

It helps to share your experiences with others so that you don't have to burden the entire load, you'll find that you'll fit right in here because members can relate with you and offer you guidance and support. You're not alone.

Hi hope2017

I agree with Mutt that you are not alone and members will indeed be able to relate to you. I have several BPD, though undiagnosed, family-members and know how difficult this can be.

Your family-member was diagnosed several years ago following a crisis situation. Unfortunately the person is in a another crisis situation now. Did your family-member get any targeted treatment for the BPD after receiving the diagnosis? Is your family-member currently being treated for the BPD?

It is clear that in spite everything you care about your family-member very much and are also understandably concerned for the child who is involved.

Is lying the only problematic behavior this family-member exhibits or are there also other behaviors?

I hope to read more of your story later. I am glad you've reached out for support and advice here because BPD really is quite a challenging disorder. Take care
