Title: Diagnosed BPD adult child now diagnosed as dissociative identity disorder? Post by: wannabeamomma on August 07, 2026, 07:52:38 PM My 30 yo son checks all the boxes for a bpd diagnosis. His life has been in crisis mode. Loss of income due to evolving circumstances. Thought he found a lifeline with a high achieving woman (whose family is well off) whom he wasn’t dating but became pregnant.
Impulsively moved in together with dreams of marriage and living happily ever after. Marriage was called off but they still live together. Shortly afterwards he became suicidal and was involuntary committed. They are far from being compatible. My poor grandson was born into this volatile environment. Paying for therapy for him and after just three sessions his therapist diagnosed him with DID (dissociative identity disorder). Had to look it up. Used to be called multiple personality disorder. I have never seen anyone else post about the diagnosis of a loved one being switched to DID. If anyone else has experienced this please share. Sorry no I havent heard of anyone posting about DID. I wonder how the therapist came up with this diagnosis as from my limited understanding DID and Bpd are quite different and surely it would have been something you would have picked up on by now. Post by: Pook075 on August 12, 2026, 11:33:37 AM In my personal opinion, I hate how people are diagnosed for most mental health disorders. There's a list of generalized symptoms and if you have enough of them, you get the label. The problem is, many of those traits will overlap for different disorders. Also, what's just a temporary thing versus an actual pattern/trait?
My BPD child has been diagnosed with bipolar and recently autism. Are all three correct? Who knows. It does make me wonder though if the diagnoses are even helpful in the grand scheme of things. Yes, you would think that not only I but our other family members and friends would have picked up on all these “selfs” as the therapist called them. Actually had a video session with the therapist with my son and my grandson’s mother so that she could help us understand DID. (Oh and did I mention that I’m the one paying for all this bs therapy?) I can’t help but be skeptical like both of you since it seems the diagnoses seem to shift and change even with the same therapists. My only hope is that the current therapist is somehow able to provide him with some type of treatment and advice that will actually help him.
