Title: My son has BPD
Post by: Sleuthcity on April 24, 2017, 07:15:44 PM
Hello. I am just learning about BPD since my 26 year old son was diagnosed with BPD in January 2017. He has been misdiagnosed with other disorders since 2008.
His new psychiatrist has told me to get therapy for myself and read about the disorder.

Hi there Sleuthcity

I'd like to welcome you to the forum. I'm very glad you're here.

My BPDs26 got diagnosed at 24 following a crisis. BPD is just devastating and so exhausting but the diagnosis came as a relief to us all. I got back to basics following diagnosis. I focussed on improving our core relationship as it had broken down because I reacted to his bad choices.

I encourage you to read as much as you can about BPD. Take a look at the Start Here at the top right hand side of this page. The more I learned, the better understood, the less I reacted. It's been 17 months now and our relationship is good, despite the problems.

This forum has been my life saviour. I've worked hard on improving my communication and validation skills and my BPDs has responded positively to the change of approach.

My BPDs is only just seeking treatment. How has your son reacted to his diagnosis and is he willing to engage in his treatment?
