Title: first time here
Post by: one scared mom on July 28, 2017, 05:13:48 PM
Hi,
I'm not sure of anything - how this works, what to do/say, how to get through a day.
My 17 yr. old daughter has been diagnosed with emerging BPD. I am reading Stop Walking on Eggshells.
I would really like to find an in-person support group in my area. Is there such a thing?
Thank you for reading.

Dear one scared mom,

Welcome! It is all very very difficult. Funny I've found you asking about local in-person support, because I'm having the same feeling this morning. I discovered that there are Meet-ups in my vicinity. My metropolis also has a good mood disorder support group, not sponsored by any org in particular, so I think it's unique to my locale. You can also look around on the NAMI website.

Stop Walking on Eggshells is great. Randi Kreger's Essential Family Guide to Borderline Personality Disorder is the one I have loaded with post-its. My current favorite is Valerie Porr's Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder, A Family Guide for Healing and Change, which I am finding super comprehensive, practical, and compassionate.

Sounds like you will keep reading and keep seeking resources. Have you discovered www.borderlinepersonalitydisorder.com/family-connections/ ?  They offer a 12-week course for families (I haven't taken it yet but have heard it's good; I'm on the waiting list). It is also offered online (scroll down at the link).

This forum is tremendously helpful, supportive, validating. I keep poking around in the different threads and keep finding so many relevant experiences, great tips, and love.

Yours,
MamaD

One more thought on this, regarding access to other parents in-person. Wouldn't it be great if there were a way for us to network? Like, a list of people who want to meet up, and you could search by zip code? Maybe this exists somewhere, or could be started somehow. Anybody? Suggestions? This site would be a great place to host that.

It would just be so great sometimes to be able to sit with a BP parent over coffee.  *)
