Title: When the dog notices the emotional roller coaster Post by: Letloverule on August 11, 2017, 11:52:33 PM My SOwBPD and I just adopted a rescue dog a month ago. She is a beautiful hound and is so loving- yet still has some residual anxiety from where she came from.
Our intent in adopting a dog was to become more active and have an animal to interact with together. My own intent was to have a dog to help calm me down... .I spoke with my SO about this and she was supportive of my thoughts. Now we are a month in and I notice the dog reacting to the rages... .she goes in another room and lays down. My SO sees this and her rages break. But there's also the flip side where my SO now accuses me of making the dog like me better and having her bond with me more. To be honest- the dogs calms me and vice versa. SO riles her up with playing or the dog doesn't respond to SO because of the anger. I just find this really telling and wanted to share with you all. My dogs used to tremble with fear anytime my H began to yell. One pooped on our bed out of fear once. Our new puppy goes and hides in the closet when he rages.
All you can really do is comfort the dog when she is scared. Try not over do comse, project onto the dog your own emotions, or anthropomorphize. Your pwBPD just has to deal with the natural consequences with the dog. Maybe you could encourage them to play together and try to form their own relationship when things are calm. |
