Title: Seeking Advice
Post by: swtkiss80 on August 16, 2017, 12:04:53 AM
Hello,
I really don't know where to begin, other than my sister and I need some sort of help/guidance for our mom. She's 58, has not been formally diagnosed with BPD but we are fairly certain this is what she suffers from. We both have graduate degrees in counseling, in different areas of speciality, but neither one of us knows exactly how to help.

She IS the description of BPD to a tee and has been, our entire lives. I'm 37 and my sister nearly 33. Has anyone successfully convinced their family member to seek treatment? What can we do if she doesn't consent? What if she doesn't even realize there's something wrong?. My mother and I personally don't speak(after her cutting ties for what feels like the thousandth time) and she just did the same to my sister.
She lives with our grandma, 75, who also is , we believe, mentally unstable as well.

Any guidance on where to even begin?

Hi Swtkiss80

Welcome to our family! Thank you for reaching out and sharing some of your story with us. It is certainly so hard having a pwBPD! My mom was also an uBPD.

How interesting that both you and your sibling have degrees in counseling! Seems as if when we go through the things us kids of a BPD Parent have gone through, we often have a depth of compassion and understanding that others do not. It is hard to know what to do when you are so close to the source of pain as well.

I have a few links to share with you that hold helpful information:

Getting a Borderline into Therapy  (https://bpdfamily.com/content/how-to-get-borderline-into-therapy[b)
BPD BEHAVIORS: Fear of Intimacy  (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=79300.0[b)

There are so many things going on with a pwBPD that it becomes complicated to set up boundaries and have any type of relationship. Are either you or your sibling in T for help with this? What other questions do you have?
