Hi, I just joined this group to become better at supporting my 26 year old daughter who has BPD, anxiety, ADD, attachment disorder, cognitive challenges. I've benefited from the Family Connections class, NAMI Family to Family and Basics plus many workshops, books, and therapy. Yet, I feel like my interactions with my struggling daughter may not be helping her become an independent, functioning adult. She is a single Mom to a delightful 5 year old daughter. Daughter has been unable to keep entry level jobs longer than a month, lacks many life skills, is on Disability which doesn't provide enough for her to live on. Thus, she is often financially dependent on me for the basics. She continues to make poor decisions like getting a puppy when she doesn't have enough money for rent, insurance, food. We have almost daily contact (she lives an hour away) and I need interaction with other parents to help me improve and practice strategies that will help her gain independence. I'm almost 70 and won't be able to do my current practices forever. I look forward to interacting with others like me. Thank you for providing this forum!

Hi MovingtoSupport

Welcome to bpdfamily.   I'm sorry what brings you here and glad you found us for support.

You'll find many parents here working towards their adult children living independently like you, looking to improve and practice strategies that will help them gain independence.  Does your daughter recognise her poor choices after the event, puppy v rent, food? Does she have any support apart from you to set out goals and work towards them? My 28DD lives at home and I’m of the opinion she’ll require social support to help her live independently when that time comes, that's what I'm researching at the moment, what is available.
