I went to see The Glass Castle this evening.  I cringed through most of it.  While the Walls family was portrayed somewhat differently from mine, there was SO much that I recognized... .the moving every year to a whole other town or city, the cruelty and  abuse, the neglect, the parents' lies / inability to recognize their own symptoms and resulting behaviours, etc.  I did love that the siblings banded together and I wish so very much that I could have done that with my sister --- instead, we went our separate ways.  Such a good film.  I'm not sure that I'm up for reading the actual memoir --- it took everything in me just to see the film.  I did take a moment, though, to find this website that offers some fact-checking and comparison... .www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/glass-castle/

I downloaded this book over a year ago based upon a recommendation here.  I suppose I finally ought to read it before the movie... .my fiction tends to be pulp: apocalyptic sci-fi lately. My escapism.

I read the memoir several years ago.  For some reason I had a hard time staying awake through the first 1/4 of the book.  But then I reached a point where I could hardly put it down, and there was one jaw dropping moment after another.  Especially the moment where the grandmother tries to molest their brother, and both parents respond with a "so what" attitude.  I liked how it was written -- Jeannette keeps a relatively naiive, trusting, and non-judgemental voice throughout the book. So much so that when she and her sister are saving money in a piggy bank so the sister can leave town, the reader has the pleasure of cringing and knowing that the dad is going to steal it.   I still haven't seen the movie.  I'm probably going to wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it.
