Title: Introduction
Post by: mom2ela on September 27, 2017, 05:41:42 PM
My husband and I have been dealing with our BPD 17 year old son. He was diagnosed about 6 months ago. He has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety as well. We have been in DBT which he was kicked out of. Residential which helped very little. We are now starting a new DPT group. We are at the point where we can no longer live in the same home. He refuses to follow any rules and is destructive. He lies so much that we have not idea what is true and what is not. I'm just exhausted trying much harder than he is. It is true you can't help someone that doesn't want help... .but so hard to accept when it is your child.

Hello mom2ela,

I am so sorry for the anguish that you and your husband are feeling at trying to help and deal with your son.  I have a twenty year old BPD daughter and have felt many of the same emotions you are feeling.  I understand that exhaustion - it is both mental and physical.  You are right about not being able to give help to someone who won't accept it and it can be so very frustrating.  With my daughter, I just felt that I had to find the right type of "help" to offer.   She is a little older than your son, and I do very clearly remember how hard it was to try to help her while the influence peers and pop culture meant so much more to her than our opinions. I am happy to say that at this moment, we are doing a little better - radical acceptance on my part has helped a lot.

You mentioned that you can no longer live in the same home as your son.  Where is he living now?

Hang in there, mom2ela.  It is obvious that you are a very loving and thoughtful mother.  Others on this board understand how hard it is and offer support.  Please keep posting.    MomMae
