Title: My mother has BPD
Post by: Fern Smith on December 29, 2017, 11:43:25 AM
We've recently discovered that my mom has BPD. Some family members suggested that she has BPD, which did not go over well. She has started denying this "accusation" and refuses to get help. We would like to hear other people's experiences with this and hope to receive support.

What kinds of behaviors led several family members to BPD?

Truthfully,  a BPD Dx (especially an armchair diagnosis--- not criticizing here,  most members landed here by doing just that including me) is seen as harsh.  Much more so than "you seem depressed, have you thought about reaching out for help?" for example.

We have an article which can provide some insight.

Is your dad involved?

Hey Fern Smith,

Quiet a discovery, you must have a lot of questions. Its great that you not alone in your view of BPD. It is worth pointing out that someone with BPD will deny anything they see as a negative thing, so denial of BPD is standard. So it is very rare they will go to therapy, and the older they get the rare that is. However, there are many techniques discussed in this forum for getting the best out of someone with BPD.

As odd as the BPD thing is, their behaviour is remarkably similar, so if you recount your concerns or childhood memories, you will probably find plenty on this forum that will validate that. Welcome to the forum and feel free to join in, ask questions etc... .
